Zero Emissions Race!

November 8th, 2010

I just came across this article.  Currently there is a Zero Emissions Race attempting to go around the world… only using electric cars!  In order to ensure that they truly have zero impact they are purchasing offsets for their other travel (ie boating it across the Pacific).

Check out the entire story here:

Degrowth is for Today

June 7th, 2010

Degrowth ?

Thirty years ago, Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen published a book Degrowth Tomorrow (1979). We say, Degrowth today.

The economic crisis of 2008-09 brings a new perspective. Economic degrowth can be good for the environment but it must be socially sustainable. The Degrowth movement advocates for the downscaling of production and consumption as they lie at the root of long term environmental issues and social inequalities. Attempts have been made to greenwash the economy, but without success.

The Copenhagen summit last winter is a clear evidence that overproduction and ecology do not work together…The aim of the degrowth movement is to maxmize happiness and well-being (rather than Gross Domestic Product -GDP!) through non-consumptive means—sharing work, consuming less, while devoting more time to art, music, family, culture and community. At the individual level, degrowth is achieved by voluntary simplicity.

How do we de-grow the economy and maintain jobs? The evidence is overwhelming …

Downtown Vancouver Find!

March 5th, 2010
Globe by Science World

Building Responsibly

So the other day during the Olympics walking around Vancouver, taking in the sites, I stumbled across this globe by Science World.

It’s put here by the Girl Guides?  (Sorry if I got that wrong, I didn’t take a picture of the creators) and they did a great job with the stats around the globe trying to inform people of the simple changes that we could make in the building community to allow recycling and less of an impact on our landfills.  Great work!

Reverse Globe - Building Socially Responsibe

Building Socially Responsible Globe by Science World in Vancouver

Not to be on a soap box, but we all need to do our part in our work place, home and around town.  Each small step will start to get others to notice and make a change in their lives. As the Green movement gathers steam small changes will get larger and more people will become aware.

A great place to start (here is the shameless plug) is to meet others in the area that are like-minded and who are leading the charge.  You can do this at Surrey Green Drinks! We’ve also started having speakers who will educate our attendees.

Look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

PS Sorry for the quality of the second picture!  I only had my cell phone with me!

Dream – Green Jobs?

February 19th, 2010

I was reading one of my many “green” blogs today and stumbled across a stat:  “The Canada-based Environmental Careers Organization forecasts that employment growth in green sector jobs will have surpassed Canada’s national average by 23 percent by 2011.” To read more about this post check out the Green Living Blog

Reading this I would assume you (those who read this blog) would love to be immersed 24/7 in making a difference through sustainability, and we all applaude that.  Is it time that maybe you start trying to prepare for this big “eco job boom”? Maybe that is how we all need to move forward… taking 1 step at a time.

With that in mind a few weeks ago I stumbled across an add for a Certificate program at SFU that may be the right thing to get you started.  I’ve never taken it and know no more about it than what is said on the website.  All I’m trying to get you to be aware of is that there are services out there to help you get started and be ready for the boom of new jobs over the coming years!

Rare Find…

February 8th, 2010

So the past weekend I was out for a walk and stumbled across an antique store in Fort Langley.

With some time to kill I entered only to discover that this particular antique store never ends… it’s HUGE!

As I was perusing Istumbled across a copy of an old “magazine” (it’s actually more of a newspaper in my opinion).  It was the second edition of “Earth Times”.  It’s the May 1970 issue.  At this time Earth Times was based in San Francisco.  Needless to say I purchased it and have been reading through.  Funny that the same things that we are trying to change today were hot topics of conversation then.  Although progress has been made, we have to ask…

When will the general population start to listen?

Below is a copy of the cover which I found particularly entertaining.

Earth Times - May 1970

Found this magazine in an antique store... very interesting read!

I will be bringing a copy of this magazine to the Surrey Green Drinks gathering on Wednesday and look forward to seeing you there!

South Fraser Witness Trail

January 28th, 2010
South Fraser Witness Trail Builders

South Fraser Witness Trail Builders

How close is your favorite nature trail? Would you be surprised that a beautiful new hiking trail is being opened by the Wilderness Committee and Surrey Environmental Partners not far from the south side of the Port Mann Bridge? The good news is that the South Fraser Witness Trail is officially opening with a short ceremony and guided hike on Saturday January 30th at 11 am.

Nestled along the edge of Surrey Bend Regional Park and the banks of the Fraser River, this lush and magnificent trail will make you forget that major cities are close by. The bad news is that this area is slated to be destroyed to make way for the South Fraser Perimeter Road as part of the Gateway project.

Please join us for the trail opening and see for yourself what is at stake. We need to stop freeway expansion for the sake of local green space, habitat for local species and to slow global warming before it’s too late.

The trail head where we will meet is on 168 St, 400 meters northwest of the intersection of 168 St. and 108 Ave, in Fraser Heights. There is direct bus service from Surrey Central Skytrain on the C74 bus, just get off at 168 St and 108 Ave and walk northwest on 168 St (past 108A Ave).

Google map link with trailhead marked: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&q=49.202606,-122.759857%20%28Trailhead%202%20actual%29

The hiking trail has rugged sections and water resistant footwear is recommended. This event will proceed rain or shine and will only be canceled in case of high winds or other dangerous conditions. Please bring water and lunch if you want to go on the hike.

Tapped the Movie

January 20th, 2010

I was forwarded this a little while ago and we were thinking it would be a good idea to check out the movie and attempt to get a sneak preview here in the Lower Mainland of BC.  We’ve heard good things about this movie and what better way to educate everyone?

Check out the website: Www.tappedthemovie.com and view the trailer.

Atlas Films’ documentary TAPPED takes a critical look at the bottled water industry, the problems caused by plastic in our environment, the global water crisis and climate change.   We just had our international premiere in Amsterdam.  To view a trailer for TAPPED, please visit:

Cheers,
